20 June 2005 00:39am - Picking my way up my e string

Fred Pool | |
Last lesson we had a great time going over some exercises to improve picking technique. Here is the short list we came up with:
Insides
Outsides
1 on the first, 2 on the second
2 on the first, 1 on the second
Tremolo Picking
4 finger runs (with tremolo picking)

Use alternate picking for this:
---------5-------------5----
-5-7-8---8-7-5-7-8---8-7-5-

Hammer-ons
Pull-offs

Trills:
-7-8-7-5----------5-7-5------
-----------8----------------8-

You may want to copy and paste this somewhere you can print from.

Hey Insanist how ya doin? I checked your book out thats pretty cool. Do all of the links open? Im hoping i can make it this weekend...the thing is ive been broke and dont get paid untill the first and i dont like going there and not paying you because you do such a good job. AFter the first ill be personal lessons all the way. I was playing at least 4-5 hours a day when school was in and that was average sometimes more. Now i only play like 2 1/2 or so and it seems like im not getting much accomplished. I dont really try to play anyones elses music, ive really been working on the solo's(everything you taught me about the penatonic i have down) and the fast picking. So i was wandering if you had any cool songs that you suggest i should learn so im not playing the same ol crap over and over? Anything will help, even some practices maybe. But i better get going..i only have an hour to play before bed, lol. Hope to hear from you soon

Yeah...its me again, haha. I just wanted to say that your online book is awesome! I just took a peak and it's so cool how you've gone about showing the relationships of the notes. One thing I might suggest, if I may, is that you tell them WHY the sets on the high e string are the same as the low E, some people might not know, so just thought I'd toss my two cents in.

Okay hey, so I just got myself one of those hex wrench sets and I'm lowering the action of my strings. My question is that if I get a smaller gauge string (i.e. 9 gauge) could I lower them even more before I get that buzzing?

Chris Rassi |
Hey everyone! I've been taking lessons from Fred and Keith now for about two months and I can't believe all I've learned! It would have taken me years to discover this had it not been for them! When I went to my first lesson, the whole "Mama, Papa, Adopted Boy, etc." kind of threw me off and I was thinking to myself, "Oh wow...these guys need help" but after a few lessons, I realized the necessity of it and how awesome it is! For all those who are even considering learning to play, you should stop on by, its so awesome!

Hey fred my man, how ya doin? Pretty good here, i wish i could of made the last lesson but i went out of town for memorial weekend. Ill try my best to make it to the next lesson(i should be there)i mean shoot, if i dont go, then who the hell is going to inspire me? Well anyways i was wandering about the wami bar... can i hurt my guitar at all with it? Also i sometimes put my picks under the plate on my guitar and i lost one in there, will that effect the sound? Last question: with tremolo picking, what can i do to seriously improve that? I really want to get it down. Is there any exercises besides just pickin away? I need to get going though, so i hope to hear from you soon. See ya on the flip side

Aright Fredness its been a while since we last talked and i missed your last lesson since i was out of town. Ill be there this saturday for sure though. But i have a question me and my neighbor were trying to jam earlier, and hes used to playing these same 3 chords(g,e,d) and he plays sort of like a slow nirvana song...what advice would you have for him when it comes to expanding chords or changing rythym? I showed him the family of chords and a couple of the other classical chords. We are trying to create a little song, so hes looking for like a good chorus beat and then as soon as he gets on track then i can follow a long and not have to worry about him getting off beat. But if you have any ideas or suggestions when it comes down to chords that go with chords, or certain amout of times you play or chord or how many chords you should play, i would like to know..whatever you can tell me would be great and inspiring so i hope to hear from you soon. Keep rockin you insaneist. If i had it my way youd be on tv.

Hey everybody! We were tonight's debut...debute? (spell check anyone???) band on KROG!!! Yeah, Aaron took our Dragon CD in the other day. The lady listened to it...liked it, and featured us as their "debute" band of the night. I was over at Aaron's house and we were freakin' glued to the radio from 7:00-9:00.
When the song came on, Chainsaw Doctors, there was, of course, that LOOOONG intro thing (I think I'll edit that part to make it a seperate track that can be skipped over) and then BAMM! The doctor was IN!!! We were pretty excited.
One thing, I want to go back over the mix and fine tune the sound. I felt like the mids were being drowned out by the bass and the highs. About half way through the song, it sounded to me like the people at the station did a little of their own adjustments to compensate for that. So, the Garland Pool hits the radio!
I hope everyone got my message and was able to tune in and even call in and make a fuss for us!!!

FRed myman, you crack me up. Your lesson didnt crack me up, just someof the little things do. lol anyways man that was awesome. Im glad you check the forum as often as you do. It seems like im checkin it every 5 minutes to see what you say. Everything you said really helped out, its just going to take some motivation and understanding on kano's side. I will listen to crazy train as soon as im done with this message, it sounds like it will be a pretty cool comparison. I cant wait to see you guys on saturday, your lessons are awesome and inspiring. Im sure ill have another question before then though, so keep an eye out for me. Im glad that my guitar instructor is a geru i hope i can reach that status some day, and i think your method will get me there faster than anything else. Again thanx. Ill talk to you later, take it easy "fredness" lol.

Hey Guys,
It's Jack again, I haven't heard from you for a while and I was just wondering if you guys still needed a drummer. The last time I talked to Keith was a First Friday a couple of months ago. I'm at school right now on one of the computers and I'm listening to your guys's cd. I love it. It's really good. Anyways if you still want me to try out for you guys, you can call me. My phone number is: 479-4816. I'm not usually home, but if you just leave a message I'll get back to you guys. Keep up the frekin' good work. Peace...in the middle east. :D

Hey main...that was a great "online lesson" you just gave me. It really cleared up some things. I couldnt sleep so i picked up the geetar and checked this out, so thanx a lot; it really put me in a good mood. Ya ill make sure to let Kano know about what you told me and ill also make sure he shows up next weekend too. About the one on one time should i come in any earlier or should come in at the same time and stay later? Because i would like to definately start paying you if you can get me some one on one time. It seems that my passion for the geetar and for getting better grows day by day. I played for a good 7 hours today, the most ive ever played in one day. But whats better than playing your guitar on crappy rainy day, or how about any day, i dont think anything. Ive been adding a lot of messages to your forum so if you want me to just keep them all under the first response just let me know. Thanx a lot for all of the help, im ready to learn more and more. Im sure ill come up with some more questions for you before the weekend. So i hope to hear from you again. Catch ya on the flip side. -Captain Cwyin Wyan(lol thats kano's nickname for me, he thinks its pretty funny)

Such as like he plays an E chord and i could solo the penatonic or the head set, bridge set, triple block; i guess we wanna know what goes with what chord, or if its to hard to explain on here maybe you could just give us an idea of what to screw around witih. But i gotta get goin, c ya later

hey fred, thanx for the lesson today it was great. I was a little out of it all day so i kind of forgot a few things. so i was wandering if you could explain that slow van halen part again. I cant remember what you called it, but you said it was kind of like another song. Also with the tapping harmonics 12 frets up, do you tap the harmonic, or do you tap the note which makes a harmonic? MY last question is, i was wandering if i could get some one on one time with you sometime, because i learn a lot more when its just you and you are damn inspiring to me. So let me knwo what you think. Thanx for you time. Ill catch ya later.

Hey Fred, hows it goin? Pretty good here. Hopefully Kane went to the lesson and gave you your chart back. But anyways i was wandering if you could tab out riff #1 & #25 from that van halen video, and either put it on here or email it to me at rocksteady5546@yahoo.com...its kind of hard for me to see exactly what hes doing, so that would be really cool if you could do that, and if not thats cool too. Ill talk to you later, have a good one

Hey Fred, hows it goin? Pretty good here; unfortionately i wont be able to make untill the weekend after next, ill be out of town this weekend. I still have your guys family of chords chart, and ill see if kane will bring it to you this weekend. But anwyays i have a question, i was wandering if you know how to do the dance the night away solo from van halen. It has something to do with tapping and harmonics, and i couldnt figure out the tab. So if you could let me know, that would be awesome. I hope to see you guys soon. P.S: ive been tortoring the hell out of my self with those exercises, so hopefully you guys will be pleased with the results. But I gotta go, check ya later.
